Hi there!
I know it’s
been a while since my last blog post, but the past 4 weeks have been so action
packed that I barely had the time to think about it. Since you’re all very curious
to know what’s happening in Julie’s world, it’s about time to give you an
update about my Canadian life! (It’s still pretty sweet and I’m lovin’ every
second of it!)
It’s
amazing that, after being here for 6 months now, I can still feel the support
of my family and friends back home. Thank you! You’re probably not used to me
saying these words, but I love you all! I know that some people might find it
hard to believe that I’m happier here than I was in Belgium, but it’s simply
the truth. I’m very grateful for all the beautiful people I already met during
my journey and I know for sure that I’m in for some more treats! Although I’m
only 24 years old and I don’t have a clue what to do with my life – Yeah, still
not :-) – I think it’s pretty safe to say that my future doesn’t include a life
in Belgium. At this point, I can’t reveal any more details about it, since it’s
not official yet, but just keep an eye on my blog during the next couple of
months.
After
counting down the days for a while, it was finally time to show my sister, my
mum and our friend Kirsten what life in Panorama is all about! At first, it
felt really weird having them around since I’m pretty used to spending my time
by myself doing what I like to do :-) Constantly switching between Dutch and
English isn’t really easy either. Dang!
But God, we
had so much fun! We went skiing in Panorama for 2 days, went swimming in the
natural Hot Springs in Radium, went dog sledding in Lake Louise, went out for
dinner a couple of times and showed everyone here that Belgian girls can party…and
drink! :-) As I wasn’t around for my sister’s birthday, I decide to go all the
way and give her the best surprise EVER…a heli fondue with the four of us! Evel,
I hope you had the time off your life at the ‘Top of the World’!
On Top of the World! |
After
signing the Canadian flag as a memento of our little holiday in Canada it was
time to go back to my normal life. The end of February and the beginning of
March have been so busy at rk Heliski, that it almost looked like we were all doing
our job on autopilot. Being part of such a great team makes it impossible for
me to be homesick! It saddens me that the our ’13 – ’14 season ends in 2 weeks ,
but I had the best time ever.
My
colleagues even made it possible for me to go heliskiing for the 4th
time. Yay! On my only day off I woke up to this: “Julie. How the f*ck do you
want to go heliskiing if you’re not picking up your phone?!” And only a couple
of seconds later a second voicemail “Julie, answer your phone! You’d better be dragging
your ass to the Plex because there’s a seat in the helicopter for you”. It took
me only 2 seconds to make a decision between staying at home doing laundry or
going heliskiing.
GET TO THE CHOPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER! :D
I think,
after the third run, I was about to pee my pants because I was so happy. Being
surrounded by huge glaciers, a little sunshine on your face and a perfect
bluebird sky…God, I love my life :-) After all this time, I still feel so lucky
that I can share this incredible adventure with people from far and wide.
Making people happy and help them checking something off their bucket list, is
something that leaves you with such a feeling of job satisfaction. We ended up
skiing 7 runs (I’m pretty sure my legs died on the 6th one, but
there was absolutely no chance of me giving up :-) ) before the Bell212 flew us
back to the Heliplex. Guess there’s no need to say that it was an early night
for me that day :-)
The day
before St. Patrick’s Day we celebrated our lovely friend Alli with, what we
like to call, St. Alli’s day! Rob flew the 14 of us up to the Summit Hut to savour
cheese, meat and chocolate fondue. After having a couple of drinks, the girls
decided to go all the way and have shots in front of the helicopter without
their shirts. Tits out for the boys is another way of saying it :-) I’ll let
the picture speak for itself….

Cards Agains Humanity |
After
flying back to our Heliplex, we decided to play ‘Cards against Humanity’ at
Kiri’s and Beyonce’s place. Since I’m not Canadian and English isn’t my native
language, it was kind of challenging sometimes. But I, again, had such an
awesome time! My stomach was pretty upset from all the food and drinks that I
was determined to take it easy on St. Patty’s Day. But it failed :-)
On Tuesday, March 18th, we celebrated the last day of our all-time favourite pilot Derek! Derek decided that he wants to spend some time with his lovely family and I absolutely don’t blame him for it. We created a huge banner with his favourite slogan “Like I always say…”, we put pictures of him throughout Choppers Landing and ordered a cake in with the best picture of him EVER! We started drinking at about 4AM, moved to the Heli Shack to have some beer and Tequila shots after a couple of hours, finally had dinner in the T-Bar and went back for some more shots.
Guess the
short version of the past 4 weeks is this:
